Internet Servers
From SARA
SAR Alberta uses several different internet servers:
Contents |
[edit] http://www.saralberta.org
The main web site.
Most of the content is manually updated by the WebsiteMaintainer.
A small portion of the content is automatically updated by the BrettWuth's scripts for data generated from the MembershipDatabase and the BoardDatabase.
The bottom of each page should list who to contact when there are updates. Unfortunately this is often missing.
See WebsiteSuggestions for suggested improvements to the web site.
Q: Why is there is an auto script for the for the board members contacts,
A: Because the same information has to be filed with Alberta Registeries, used on mailing lists, provided to Revenue Canada (and perhaps a few other places I don't remember right now). It's efficient to have the information only entered once and have all the report generated automatically as needed.
[edit] castrov.cuug.ab.ca
is a mail domain run by BrettWuth. It's easy for him to put up mailing lists on it. The server is an old 486 running in his home office. We've thought about setting up an MX record for saralberta.org so we could have e.g. TrainCoords@saralberta.org, but haven't had time to negotiate with the SARA Board, the www.saralberta.org ISP, and CUUG.ab.ca to do that.
[edit] castrov.dyndns.org
is the same server accessible through the web. It presents the web interface to the mailing lists running on that server.
[edit] http://saralberta.dnsalias.org:8080
is a server provided by Brett Wuth of Pincher Creek SAR. It supplies the wiki. The same server also runs the web site for Pincher Creek SAR: http://pcsar.webhop.org
[edit] Is there a future intention to bring all these disparate URL's and sites into the saralberta.org domain?
Yes, but a low priority, due to shortage of volunteer time from people with technical computer skills. Don't expect it to happen anytime soon. Probably in a few years.
Q: and why some information is stored on different servers? Would it not be best to have all this on one server and maintained as such? Again I'm thinking about how this will need to be addressed as we move forward in building a new website....
A: Several different servers are being used because we're using systems volunteered by others. It's a compromise between cost and simplicity. If SARA is willing to pay the cost, we can have a simpler system.
